UI/UE Technical Lead needed for new Product Design

Hello IxDa-ers,

I hope someone in the group can help me with referrals or maybe there is a member who is looking for their next adventure.

I have been retained by a client in Broomfield to help them find someone to drive the design and development of their new product interface. This company has a wonderfully productive culture and WANTS to develop usable applications - the right way, the first time.

They are a Microsoft shop, so .NET speciality is really a requirement. It's a small team, so the UI Lead will also need to be able to code as well as drive design and IA.

This is a career-focused position so freelancers probably won't work. The company offers a competitive salary and benefits, a friendly work environment where people are people and the opportunity to grow as they grow.

Please contact me directly at kimberly@goldstonepartners.com or 303.532.2744 for more information.

Make it a great day!

Information Architects & Interaction Designers Needed

SpireMedia, Inc. is looking for mid-level to senior IA's/Interaction Designers, as well as juniors looking for state-of-the-art industry on-the-job training.

You must be able to define user profiles, identify user tasks, derive inventories of content and functionality, organize these effectively into site maps and wireframes. This will involve designing interactive user interfaces to the highest standard of customer experience using the latest media (e.g., RIA, Web 2.0, mobile, etc.) and applying quality criteria for usability for Web sites and Web applications. You should be able to specify low-level GUI software specifications, such as how data is displayed, where it is drawn from, defaults, formats, ranges, data types, lookups, constraints, precision, conditions, and changes in state. You should also be comfortable working in Viso and Power Point, and be willing and able to learn (via internal coaching) new tools (such as Axure), new techniques, and new processes that may seem unfamiliar and unusual, such as communication-theoretic approaches to usability.

IxDA Colorado this Wed May 14 - Simon Hill talks Web Business R&D

Hello everyone,

It's Oleh and Laurie, co-Chairs of Colorado IxDA, with a heads-up about the IxDA Colorado meeting this Wednesday May 14.

SpireMedia's Simon Hill will discuss how assumptions and metaphors from the world of marketing design don't always work when designing web applications. Simon's thoughts may seem like "motherhood" to some, and heresy to others.

So check it out... see where you weigh in. The last meeting (which was our first meeting) featured some very interesting attendees and great conversation. Come be part of meeting #2.

Just like last time, it's at Panera Bread in Capitol Hill; conversations start at 6 PM, and we leave the room at 7:30 PM. Details here:
http://ixdacolorado.collectivex.com/calendar/event/2008/5/14/46381

BTW we're experimenting with a little interactive activity to start the juices flowing at 6 PM. Let us know what you think about that too.

See you there,

Oleh & Laurie

IxDA meeting Apr 10 2008: recap - "When IxD Leads the Way"

Hello everyone,

It's Oleh and Laurie, co-Chairs of Colorado IxDA. We promise not to email the group very often, but we wanted to make sure everyone knows about the very first IxDA meeting -- this Thursday April 10, at Panera Bread in Capitol Hill. Starts at 6 PM, and we leave the room at 7:30 PM. Speaker is Josh Zapin from texturemedia, talking about when Interaction Design makes a difference... and maybe when it doesn't. Check out the details here: http://ixdacolorado.collectivex.com/calendar/event/2008/4/10/41575

A couple things to keep in mind, as you decide whether to attend or not:

This IxDA Colorado meeting isn't your typical professional event. We want the experience to be convivial and collaboratory. No Powerpoint projections in a dark room. Lots of audience participation... you'll get more out of it if you're there. And it won't last all night.

Josh's talk will be of interest to both consultants and folks working within a company. Josh is working for an agency now, but he also has experience working in very large organizations as well as startups. He's going to talk about things that we all care about -- like how to use the best method for a project. Plus, he'll walk us through a case study, and share some sample deliverables.

It's going to be fun. We'll see you there.

--Oleh and Laurie

job lead, Redmond area, Washington State: UX Designer, Microsoft

Passing along this job lead per Arnie Lund, who used to work at US West Advanced Technologies in Boulder back in the day. Arnie is now a User Experience Director / COE at Microsoft. This job would be working with Arnie. The location is the greater Redmond area; Arnie's specific location is Issaquah on Lake Sammamish -- work would be somewhere around there.

Arnie explains that some telecommuting is possible, but local to Washington. Sadly, not telecommuting from Colorado. Relocation assistance would typically be available, as well as other benefits.

--Laurie Lamar

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Designers Needed for Microsoft's Relationship Experience Division

Job Description

Microsoft IT UX is looking for great designers to play a strategic role in
helping us define, design, and develop compelling user experiences to
deliver our brand promise through every customer touch-point with the
Microsoft ecosystem of services and software. This role requires a
multi-disciplinary skill set including the ability to understand and
integrate broad business and technical goals through a design process, and a
commitment to design innovation based on deep user understanding. The job
is all about creating exciting personalized experiences for our global user
community.

Who are our users? We are designing the self-service experiences that
virtually every Microsoft customer will touch as they use our products
(ranging from business products to entertainment), the tools that our
partners use as they build on, sell and support our products, and the tools
that we use ourselves as we help our customers put Microsoft and partner
solutions together to address customer needs.

Microsoft IT UX is establishing a creative culture and production framework
for sustained design excellence. A qualified candidate should be able to
present a body of work that demonstrates a passion for experience design; a
sense of urgency to explore and expand the boundaries of design that can be
used to solve complex interaction problems; strategic breadth, attention to
detail, and a sense of balance for aesthetics, innovation and usability; and
a deep understanding of scenario-based design. The designer should also be
able to stand back and identify the design patterns that can be leveraged
across applications building on Microsoft IT's evolving technology framework
to expand the impact of the designer's ideas. A qualified candidate must
share our belief that design is as much about behavior and emotion as it is
about utility and ease of use.

At least a Bachelor's degree in a relevant design field (industrial design,
graphic design, HCI, etc.) is required. An advanced degree would even be
better. The candidate should have a minimum of 4-5 years of related work
experience; and have demonstrated an understanding of how substantial
business value can be delivered through design innovation. Trial and
experimentation leads to better designs, and so the ability to prototype at
several levels of fidelity is important. Experience with WPF, Silverlight,
and similar tools is a definite plus.

We'll be looking for excellent problem-framing skills; strong verbal and
written skills; and a clear sense of process and the ability to innovate on
process tools and conventions. Strength in working collaboratively on
multi-disciplinary teams is critical, along with a commitment to the idea
that the best work is done through collaboration.

All candidates must send a portfolio or work samples along with their inquiries.

Job title: User Experience Designer II
Job code: 224639

Contact
Arnie Lund
Arnie.lund@microsoft.com

Considering a move from bay area to Colorado

Hi -

Oleh/Laurie - thanks for creating this group.

Actually, I still live in the Bay Area, but my wife and I are seriously considering a move to Denver/Fort Collins/Boulder. Primarily for the lower cost of housing and a change of scene.

Hoping to listen in on the buzz. How are the interaction jobs out that way generally - are there good options? Any advice on companies or cities that would be better to check out?

Thanks!

Eugene
